Mentoring is coaching by a mentor coach that allows the coach to develop and improve his/her skills. ICF mentoring will focus on the 8 coaching competencies. This space for developing or refining essential coaching skills (8 ICF competencies) is carefully guided by the ICF, "Mentoring coaching means that an ICF certification candidate is coached to develop their coaching skills in order to meet the requirements for the certification exams. Mentoring coaching is not coaching to develop one's coaching practice, life balance, or to address other issues that are not related to the development of the candidate's coaching skills.
Mentor coaching should take place over an extended time (three-month minimum) in a cycle that allows for listening and feedback from the mentor coach while also allowing reflection and practice on the part of the individual being mentored.
Supervision, on the other hand, is a practice already widespread in most coaching professions. It is defined as an interaction that occurs when a coach shares his or her experiences of coaching practice with a supervisor in order to be supported and to engage in reflective dialogue and collaborative learning for the development and benefit of the coach, his or her clients and their organizations.
Just as the tools we use require regular maintenance to ensure effective functioning, we as coaches need to maintain our presence, neutrality and skills to ensure optimal coaching for our clients.
Clients (and coaches) live in a complex world; supervision is an opportunity to add depth, breadth, strategies and perspective.
It is therefore a creative space to:
  • Deepen understanding of our impact on the relationships created with our clients ;
  • Bring fresh eyes to the blind spots and organizational myopia that can sometimes obscure our systemic view of the big picture;
  • Exploring the ethical dilemmas we can fall into and developing the reflex of ethical reflection.
