Objectives

The main objective of this training is to introduce the participants to the basic concepts of Power BI and to present the various features offered by the application in terms of report creation and content sharing.

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
  • Understand what Power BI is;
  • Master the basic concepts;
  • Use Power BI Desktop to connect to simple data sources and create basic reports;
  • Share analytical content;
  • Use the Powerbi.com app to explore analytics content.

Contents

Module 1 - Introduction to Power BI

The purpose of this module is to enable participants to become familiar with Power BI.
Subjects discussed:
  • Overview of Power BI;
  • Positioning of Power BI in the Microsoft offering;
  • Documentation and communities.
Module 2 - Overview of Power BI Desktop
The purpose of this module is to familiarize participants with the Power BI Desktop application.
Subjects discussed:
  • Basic concepts in Power BI Desktop;
  • Navigation overview;
  • The different modules of the application;
    - Reports;
    - Data;
    - Model;
  • The filter area;
  • The visualizations area;
  • The field area;
  • Overview of an existing report.
Module 3 - Obtaining Data from Power BI Desktop
The purpose of this module is to familiarize participants with some of the
data sources that Power BI Desktop supports.
Subjects discussed:
  • Data sources supported by Power BI Desktop
    - Files;
    - Databases;
    - Web services;
  • Types of connections;
    - Import vs. Direct Query;
  • Load data from a .CSV file;
  • Load data from an .XLSX file.
Module 4 - Augment a data model with DAX
This module aims to familiarize participants with the basic concepts of
the DAX language.
Subjects discussed:
  • Calculated columns;
  • Measures;
  • Aggregation of strings;
  • Calculation of sales taxes;
  • Count and DistinctCount functions.
Module 5 - Overviews of Types of Visualizations
The purpose of this module is to familiarize participants with the
visualizations available in Power BI.
Subjects discussed:
  • Bar charts;
  • Line charts;
  • Area charts;
  • Waterfall chart;
  • Scatter chart;
  • Donut and pie chart;
  • Cards;
  • Maps
  • Tables and Matrix;
  • Funnel;
  • KPI;
  • Slicer.
Module 6 - Creating and Publishing a Report
The purpose of this module is to allow participants to create a simple
report using the concepts learned in the preceding modules.
Subjects discussed:
  • Create a report;
  • Save a report;
  • Post a report on powerbi.com.
Module 7 - Introduction to Power BI Service
The purpose of this module is to familiarize participants with the Power
BI service.
Subjects discussed:
  • Basic concept;
  • Share a report with other users;
  • Create and share a dashboard;
